In a rural acute care setting, nurses must be prepared to assess and respond to Mental Health crises using sound clinical judgment, trauma-informed practices, and awareness of available resources. Limited access to mental health professionals means nurses often serve as the first and sometimes only point of care. By recognizing signs of distress, creating a safe and respectful environment, and connecting patients to local or telehealth supports, nurses play a critical role in stabilizing individuals, preventing further harm, and ensuring timely, culturally appropriate mental health interventions.
This course is designed to prepare nursing students to respond to a mental health crisis in a rural acute care setting, using appropriate clinical judgment, trauma-informed communication practices, and knowledge of local and telehealth resources.
